OBJECTIVE: The aim of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association is to increase knowledge of the concerns of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly among parliamentarians.
On the international level, the Association acts largely through the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. The Assembly has its headquarters in Brussels but is completely independent of the official NATO structure. It provides a forum for parliamentarians from the NATO member countries to study and discuss matters of common concern during its spring and autumn sessions. During recent years, the Assembly has also developed formal links with the democratic assemblies in the countries of Eastern Europe, who were formally members of the now extinct Warsaw Treaty Organization.
The Assembly's work deals with social, cultural, political and economic questions, as well as military matters, all of which are of vital concern to NATO member countries. Parliamentarians participate in meetings and information exchanges in North America and Europe, as well as in the regular Assembly sessions.
