Born in Nepean, Ontario, Marjory LeBreton learned the importance of hard work and commitment growing up on her family’s dairy farm. Marjory’s understanding of the challenges faced by working families, both rural and urban, reinforced her desire to involve herself in the politics of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.

Ms. LeBreton went on to serve the Conservative Party in various organizational and administrative roles during the 31 years prior to her appointment to the Senate in June, 1993. She accompanied the Rt. Hon. John Diefenbaker on Canada’s last major “whistlestop” train campaign tour in 1965, served as a tour and scheduling assistant for the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark, and as Deputy Chief of Staff and Government Appointments Director in the P.M.O. of the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney.

Since coming to the Senate she has served as Chief Opposition Whip, and was a member of a number of Senate committees, including Human Rights; Forestry and Agriculture; Internal Economy; Rules, Procedures, and the Rights of Parliament; Security and Intelligence; the Special Senate Committee on the Pearson Airport Agreements; and Social Affairs, Science and Technology, where she was Deputy Chair of the October 2002 health care study, The Health of Canadians – The Federal Role.

In February 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Senator LeBreton to the Cabinet as Leader of the Government in the Senate. From January 2007 to January 2010, Senator LeBreton was also responsible for the Cabinet portfolio relating to Canada’s seniors; first as Secretary of State, Seniors, and later as Minister of State (Seniors). In this portfolio, she had the opportunity to work on a host of issues important to seniors including combating elder abuse, assisting low income seniors, and rewarding the sacrifices of older Canadians who contributed greatly to the country we have today.

Marjory is married to Douglas and is the mother of Linda (dec.) and Michael Bruce. Senator LeBreton is a past national chairperson of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada (MADD).
