Biography

Nancy Ruth has represented Ontario in the Senate since 2005.  She lives in Toronto.  

Nancy Ruth has Chaired the Human Rights Committee and initiated studies on UNSC 1325 and Canada’s implementation of this and other Security Council resolutions relating to women, peace and security. She has also sat on Defence and Fisheries Committees.

She has served on many inter-parliamentary groups, and currently is vice chair of Canada - UK, Canada-Ireland, & on the executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Canada – Israel,  Canada-Korea, Canada-Indonesia and Canada-Netherlands.

She has sat on the Board of Directors of the Economic Council of Canada, The Canadian Centre for Arms Control, The Canada-USA Fulbright Foundation and the International Institute of Concern for Public Health, Mount St. Vincent University, among others.

Throughout her working life, she has played an active role in various religious, professional, political, educational and non-profit organizations in Canada, Britain and the United States.  She has also been instrumental in co-founding organizations that work for women’s social change in Canada like LEAF (The Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund), The Canadian Women’s Foundation, www.section15.ca ,  The Linden School, The Women’s Future Fund and the Charter of Rights Coalition.

Nancy Ruth holds a MA in the Applied Behavioural Sciences, a BA in Political Science and has a diploma in Theology.

Nancy Ruth has won a series of awards, both on the national and international scene, obtaining the South African Women for Women Friendship Award; the Government of Ontario’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Human Rights; Charles Sauriol Greenspace Award from the Conservation Fund of Greater Toronto; and Membership in the Order of Canada in 1994.  She has also received several honorary doctorates.

Ms. Nancy Ruth has spoken across Canada about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and on a myriad of issues concerning women’s rights, poverty, politics and economics.
