Other activities: Chair of the Liberal Party of Canada (Quebec) Policy Committee, re-elected since 1985; president of a number of corporations and concerns in the private sector from 1972 to 1997; art collector, founder of the Musée d’Art in Joliette, of which he was Vice President and member of the Board from 1969 to 1997, and Donor Emeritus; trustee of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (donor of a number of works of art, drawings, scale models and engravings related to architecture); Benefactor Emeritus of the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec City (donated many works of art and collections, including 3,000 costumes and accessories that have become the core of the Musée’s collection, and more than 60 nineteenth century Amerindian and Canadian artifacts). Has been volunteer chair of many charity auctions for cultural and community institutions (Fondation des ouevres de Jules et Paul-Émile Léger, United Way of Montreal, OXFAM, Friends of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Centre d’accueil pour les femmes autochtones de Montréal, Fondation de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, etc.). Has worked as a volunteer on the preparation of a number of major exhibitions circulating in Canada and on their catalogues; expert art evaluator for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec City, the Archdiocese of Montreal, the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board. Serge Joyal is a well-known and highly regarded figure in Canadian cultural circles, and his involvement is actively sought in most events designed to enhance Canada’s cultural and historic heritage.
