History

Basic Architectural Designs
  • Both the overall style and the materials used reflect the solemnity and importance of the Memorial Chamber to Canada and to the countries where Canadians died. Though not a large room, it is nonetheless graceful in its dimensions. It is shaped in a square of 24' by 24' and rises to a height of 47'.
  • Like the Parliament Buildings themselves, the Chamber is of gothic style. The fan-vaulted ceiling is supported by gothic columns made from St. Ann marble and Chateau Gaillard stone. The Chateau Gaillard stone, a gift from France, also forms the walls. Stained glass windows of Gothic Cathedral design fill the upper walls, while the lower walls are lined with 17 canopied niches, each of which encloses a marble plaque.
  • The floor is made of stone collected from the battlegrounds of Europe where Canadians fought in the First World War.
