Save Paper

Save Paper

Did You Know?
Each Canadian uses up to four trees every year in paper products.

Paper is made from trees and the more trees we use, the greater the deforestation of our planet. Try to implement some of these paper-saving tips to reduce the amount of paper that is used at your office.

  • Change your computer’s default settings so that you can put more text on each page. In MS Word, go to File ] Page Setup ] Reduce the margins and set your margins to smaller numbers. Compared to the normal settings, you could use up to 14% less paper!
  • When you are printing, reduce font size to 10 point to decrease the amount of paper required.
  • Print on both sides. In MS Word, go to File Print ] Properties ] Print on Both Sides. Set your default on your computer to print double-sided, and only select one-sided printing when really needed.
  • Use less toner when printing draft documents by not choosing best quality under Print Quality.
  • Reuse paper that is printed on one side to print/copy draft documents or cut it up and use it as a notepad. Never recycle a clean-sided sheet of paper!
  • Try creating and editing documents without printing by using electronic editing on-screen in your word processing program.
  • Avoid printing e-mail messages, as they can be archived electronically for future reference. Use the 'reply' or 'forward' features to send the information onto others.
  • When photocopying, use the 'duplex' or 'double-sided print' features whenever possible.
  • Only make the required number of photocopies. Less use of photocopiers saves energy and paper.
  • Avoid making a copy for everyone, attach a circulation slip instead.
  • When sending a fax, use a laminated cover sheet and a dry-erase pen.
  • Recycle all paper that can’t be reused.
