The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, the Hon. Maxime Bernier, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Maxime Bernier, Ray Boughen, Peter Braid, Hon. Ken Dryden, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Pascal-Pierre Paillé and LaVar Payne.

 

Acting Members present: Raymonde Folco for Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Criminal Lawyers' Association of Ontario: Constance Baran-Gerez. National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman: Pierre Daigle, Ombudsman; Mary McFadyen, General Counsel. Criminal Lawyers' Association of Ontario: Michael Spratt, Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of Condemnation of Stoning in Afghanistan.
 

On motion of Claude Bachand, it was agreed, — That the Committee condemn the stoning of young women and men in Afghanistan and call on the government to take the necessary action to put an end to these stonings as soon as possible and that it be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, December 6, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-41, An Act to amend the National Defence Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

Michael Spratt and Constance Baran-Gerez made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Pierre Daigle made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:12 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
