The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 8:59 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Gary Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Charlie Angus, Diane Bourgeois, Gord Brown, Ed Fast, Maka Kotto, Francis Scarpaleggia, Gary Schellenberger, Hon. Andy Scott and Chris Warkentin.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Diane Marleau for Hon. Hedy Fry and Paul Steckle for Tina Keeper.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Principal; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: Tony Burman, Editor in Chief , CBC News, Current Affairs and Newsworld, CBC Radio and Television; Alain Saulnier, General Manager, News and Current Affairs, French Services.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order108(2), the Committee resumed its full investigation of the role of a public broadcaster in the 21st century
 

Tony Burman and Alain Saulnier made statements and, answered questions.

 

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:40 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Maka Kotto moved, — That, Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage recommend that the federal government initiate as a matter of urgency the transfer of Quebec’s share of the subsidies of $60 million over two-years available for festivals, so that these funds can be allocated to existing provincial programs, and that adoption of this motion be reported to the House as soon as possible.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division: YEAS: Diane Bourgeois, Maka Kotto — 2; NAYS: Jim Abbott, Charlie Angus, Gord Brown, Ed Fast, Diane Marleau, Francis Scarpaleggia, Andy Scott, Paul Steckle, Chris Warkentin — 9.

 

At 10:56 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
