The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:40 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, John O’Reilly, David Pratt, David Price, George Proud and Pierrette Venne.

Acting Members present: Charles Hubbard for Judi Longfield, Janco Peric for Pat O’Brien, Wendy Lill for Chris Axworthy.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.

Appearance: From the Department of National Defence: The Hon. Arthur C. Eggleton., Minister.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Vice-Admiral G.L. Garnett, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff; Jim Judd, Deputy Minister; Pierre L. Lagueux, Assistant Deputy Minister.

The Committee proceeded to its Order of reference, dated Thursday, February 26, 1998, relating to the Main Estimates for the year ending March 31, 1999 - Votes 1, 5 and 10 under National Defence.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:35 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
