Recruitment

Basic Requirements

To qualify, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident;
  • be graduating from a secondary school or a CEGEP (with no academic interruptions) and be commencing full-time studies at one of the four universities in the National Capital Region in September of the year of employment as a Page;
  • have an overall academic average of at least 80% in the transcript of your final marks from last year (Grade 11 or secondary IV or your first year of CEGEP (Québec)), and maintain this average in subsequent transcripts of your marks;
  • be able to communicate fluently in both official languages as evaluated by the House of Commons; and
  • be accepted at one of the following universities in the National Capital Region: Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Saint Paul University or Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO).

Please note that due to the heavy study demands and inflexibility of their academic timetables, students enrolled in certain faculties and courses of study, such as science and engineering, are unfortunately ineligible. This restriction also applies to law students at the University of Ottawa. Students who wish to pursue these disciplines may apply to be Pages if they agree to change their program of study while employed as a Page.

Selection Criteria

In addition to the basic requirements, Pages must also:

  • possess superior interpersonal skills;
  • show sound judgement, be reliable, tactful and courteous; and
  • demonstrate an interest in the Canadian parliamentary system.

Interviews

Interviews for the Page Program will take place in the federal, provincial and territorial capitals between mid-February and the end of March. Please note that interviews may be scheduled during an assigned reading week, spring break, a school trip or other activity that you have planned in advance. In such cases, you are still expected to be available for the interview at the date, time and place set by the House of Commons. In order to ensure fairness to all candidates, no alternative interview arrangements will be made.

The House of Commons will pay transportation costs for any candidate who must travel to an interview site in another city.
