Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration Elects Speaker Noël A. Kinsella as Chair
OTTAWA, November 29, 2013 – Speaker Noël A. Kinsella (Fredericton-York-Sunbury - New Brunswick) has been elected Chair of the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration. His appointment is effective December 1, 2013 and he is replacing Senator Gerald J. Comeau (Nova Scotia) who has announced his retirement from the Senate.
The members of the committee thanked Senator Comeau for his service to the committee and to the Senate and welcomed Speaker Kinsella.
Speaker Kinsella was appointed to the Senate in 1990. He served in many leadership roles including Senate Opposition Whip in 1994, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in 1999, and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate in 2004. In 2006, he was appointed Speaker of the Senate, a position he continues to hold.
Speaker Kinsella will join the Deputy Chair, Senator George J. Furey (Newfoundland and Labrador) who nominated him and Senator Larry Smith (Saurel - Quebec) on the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure (Steering Committee).
