Senate Welcomes Recommendations of Auditor General
OTTAWA (June 13, 2012) – Today, Senator David Tkachuk, Chair, and Senator George Furey, Deputy Chair of the Senate Internal Economy committee, responded to the recommendations contained in the Performance Audit conducted by Michael Ferguson, Auditor General of Canada.
“We welcome the recommendations,” says Senator Tkachuk. “The Senate takes its responsibility for stewardship of public resources very seriously, and most of the recommendations have already been implemented or are in progress. The institution already has effective governance, controls and risk assessment in place, but there is always room for improvement. W e are committed to managing public funds conscientiously as we carry out our duties as parliamentarian s.”
“Senate Administration continues to put policies and practices in place to improve transparency and accountability,” says Senator Furey. “We were pleased to note there were many positive comments about our management approach, and we will continue to work with Senate Administration to improve our governance and controls. As senators, we appreciate the Administration’s high standards and their efforts to continually improve.”
Since 2009, the Senate Internal Economy committee has authorized seven independent audits, including annual audits of the institution’s financial statements.
