THE STANDING SENATE COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY
Committee to hold press conference on rural poverty and farm inputs
OTTAWA--(June 16, 2008) – The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry will be holding a press conferences at 10:00 am, June 17 to discuss two studies it has been working on; a report that provides policy recommendations to address rural decline and poverty in Canada and a report on the causes and consequences of escalating farm input costs.
The committee has been studying rural poverty and rural decline for nearly two years, travelling in every province and territory hearing testimony from rural policy experts and from hundreds of rural Canadians. The study on farm inputs was initiated earlier this year when it became clear that rising prices for fuel, fertilizer, seeds, etc., was seriously eroding farm profits.
Journalists are invited to participate in the press conference either in person or by teleconference. The proceedings will be webcast live, both in audio and video format.
