Background:
- This assignment is to be used as a cumulative assignment after the study of the federal government. It is to develop not only a knowledge base but also many of the computer and presentation skills asked for in the Alberta Curriculum.
Grade level:
- Grades 5 - 12
Time Line:
- This project will take one week working time and one class to present projects depending on your class size.
Objectives:
The students will be able to:
- Develop skills in navigating the government Internet sites.
- Develop skills in using Microsoft Power Point
- Demonstrate competence in giving a presentation
- Demonstrate knowledge of the following:
- The Executive Branch
- The Judicial Branch
- The Legislative Branch
Materials:
- Computers
- PowerPoint
- Internet Access
- Proxima notes and materials that detail Canada's government
- Handout: "Navigating Canada's Parliamentary Website"
Lesson:
- Go over with students the handout on Navigating Canada's Parliamentary website. Look at aspects of site. Show Governor Generals website, Senate, House of Commons, etc.
- Review / Teach the following aspects of using Power Point:
- Slide set-ups
- Backgrounds
- Transitions
- Timings
- Inserting Pictures
- Animation
- Students will then make a slide show that includes the following:
- Title slide for show
- Executive Branch (Title Page)
- a) Governor General
- Roles
- Duties
- Bio of current (include picture)
- b) Prime Minister
- Role
- Duties
- Bio of current (include picture)
- c) Cabinet
- Role
- Duties
- Current portfolios (list)
- Highlight one Minister
- Legislative Branch (Title Page)
- a) House of Commons
- Role (membership)
- Duties
- Highlight your M.P. (include picture)
- Number of ridings/seats
- b) Senate
- Role (membership)
- Duties
- Highlight one or two Senators from your province (include photo)
- Judicial Branch (Title Page)
- Role of the Judicial Branch
- Court structure (picture or diagram)
- Job of the Supreme Court
- Current Judges (pictures)
- Federal Court
- Role of Court
Guidelines:
- Each project should be approximately five minutes in length. It can be arranged in any order but must include the components listed above.
- Students will use the proxima to then give the presentation to the class and have the class critique their projects.
