  • To develop the critical analysis skill necessary to deal with fundamental issues relating to Canadian parliamentary democracy.

    To develop the critical analysis skills necessary to deal with the media and government as well as issues raised in the House of Commons.

Unit Objective, if applicable (3 to 6 hours)
  • To evaluate the role of the media in a Parliamentary democracy.
Lesson Objectives
  • Students will compare an issue raised in Question Period with its portrayal in the media.
Provincially Prescribed Materials
  •  
Supplementary Materials
  • CPAC video of Question Period.
  • Video tape of different television broadcasters (ex. CTV, CBC, Radio-Canada, Global)
  • Newspapers (national, regional and local)
  • Weekly Canadian news magazine

 

Method
  • Review Lesson 1.
  • View a portion of CPAC coverage of Question Period pertaining to the central issue covered in Lesson 1.
  • Teacher-led discussion (see sample questions below).
  • Divide students into groups to discuss difference and similarities in how an issue was dealt with in Question Period and how it was portrayed in the media.
  • Have each group report to the class.

  • Sample questions for teacher-led discussion:
    1. What issues were raised during the CPAC broadcast?
    2. Which issue seemed to dominate Question Period?
    3. Was it the issue raised in previous news clips?
